Terpenes compounds found in the cannabis plant. The levels of the different compounds depends on the genetics of the plant itself. There are over 7,000 strains of cannabis which are always growing at a extraordinary rate. Consequently by the time you read this post, the figure is bound to be outdated.

Terpenes

Although, found in cannabis, they are not restrcited to cannabis. For instance in some plants, terpenes attract pollinators. While in other plants, they cause a strong reaction to repel predators, such as insects or foraging animals. In addition, there are many factors that influence a plant’s development of terpenes. Including; climate, weather, age and maturation, fertilizers, soil type, and even the time of day. In conclusion, terpenes give plants their different aromas.

However, within the cannabis plant, there has been over 100 different terpenes have been identified. Subsequently, cannabis strains tends to have it’s own unique terpene type & composition. In other words, a strain like Cheese & its descendants will likely have a discernible cheese-like smell.

Terpenes may also play a key role in differentiating the effects of various cannabis strains. But to understand the extent we need some more studies. Most importantly, terpenes may play a key role in differentiating the effects of various cannabis strains. For example, some terpenes might promote relaxation & stress-relief. While others potentially promote focus & acuity.

The effect profile of any given terpene may change in the presence of other compounds in a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. Terpenes may work in harmony with eachother. But there currently isn’t enough research to confirm the terpenes effects.

Myrcene

Firstly, the most common terpene in commerical cannabis. Similarly it is believed that calming effects it may promoted. Myrcene liquid appears as a yellow oily liquid with a pleasant odor. Insoluble in water and less dense than water. Myrcene is an alkene natural hydrocarbon. But it is more precisely described as a monoterpene.

Strains that contain Myrcene:

Humulene

The terpene Humulene has a herbal aroma. Humulene is a naturally occuring monocyclic sesquiterpene. In addition, Humulene is believed that it may also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Strains that contain Humulene:

Limonene

Giving off a citrus aroma & taste it is a colourless liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon classified as a cyclic monoterpene.. It is also a natural cyclic monoterpene and major component of the oil extracted from citrus rind with chemo-preventive and antitumor activities. This terpene may provide some relief from anxiety & stress

Strains that contain Limonene:

Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene is a pale yellow oily liquid with an odor midway between odor of cloves and turpentine. Above all this is the only terpene that acts as a cannabinoid. Most importantly, it can activate the endocannabinoid system. It is a natural bicyclic sesquiterpene. In conclusion it is believed that it may have anti-inflammatory properties.

Linalool

Linalool to two enantiomers of a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in many flowers & spice plants. Subsequently the terpene Linalool has a floral aroma. It has a role as a plant metabolite, a volatile oil component, an antimicrobial agent and a fragrance. Consequently, it is believed that it may promote relaxation & have some calming effects.

Strains that contain Linalool:

Terpinolene

Firstly, around every 1 in 10 strains will be Terpinolene dominant. Terpinolene appears as a water-white to light amber colored liquid. Insoluble in water and less dense than water. Used to make plastics and resins. It is also believed that it may have uplifting effects.

Strains that contain Terpinolene:

Pinene

The most common terpene in nature is Pinene. Pinene appears as a clear colorless liquid with a turpentine odor. Less dense than water and insoluble in water. Vapors are heavier than air. Used as a solvent. However, it is believed that it could have some properties that are useful for pain, inflammation or anxiety.

Found In:

Ocimene

Ocimene aroma is discribed as; sweet, earthy & citrusy. As a result, it is frequently used in perfume. It has a role as a plant metabolite.
